    Small litters....Conclusion

Some of you may remember the thread I made about a few of my rats giving my small litter or just all dead babies, well the male I was assuming was the fault fathered a litter born today. 11 fat healthy babies and 1 more litter from him due any day now. Sounds like he wasn't at fault after all. Maybe I need to switch to all albinos from this one store now. These albino moms are very receptive and fast growers. Mind you this is her first litter. I'll be expecting good things from her.

Jake I think if you are having across the board losses and problems with litters and it doesn't sound like it's genetically related to the male, then it may be husbandry related. I know if I was dealing with this I'd be looking at how I'm managing the colony and strive to do figure out what needed done to get a better result.

Jo, did you misread my post? I said that a new line of female had much better luck. The fact that I used the same male with a different line of rats says something to me. All the females that had bad litters were from the same store, a different store than where the albinos with good litters came from. All the bad breeders were from the same store, but different moms I was told.

    Re: Small litters....Conclusion

Well Jake if they were from different mothers than those females weren't from the same maternal line so a genetic fault in a specific line seems unlikely. Hopefully things will go better with this recent litter.

    Re: Small litters....Conclusion

Well its very likely that the stores breeders were produced from their own stock so it wouldn't surprise me a bit if most of the breeders were in someway related.
