Colin Vestrand
long time keeper and breeder of carpet pythons and other snakes...
The two main areas I go field herping at is either 8 minutes away and the other is 1 1/2 away. I usually alternate between the two spots and dont visit the one 8 minutes away any more than I do the one farther away.
At my closer spot I see some king snakes (rarely) but average 3 WDB's a night. More when the hatchlings are out.
My second location which is the further of the two I see mostly mojave rattlesnakes and some sidewinders. There is one other very secret place that I go to for sidewinders.
In Illinois we have tons of herps! Here are a few.
Mud Snakes
Eastern and Western Hognose Snakes
Black Rat Snakes
Gray Rat Snakes
Black Kingsnake
Speckled Kingsnake
Red Milk Snake
Eastern Milk Snake
Cotton Mouth
Copper Head
Timber Rattle Snake
Garter Snake
Ribbon Snake
Brown Snake
Red Belly Snake
Ring Neck Snake
Rough and Smooth Green Snakes
Blue Racers
Black Racers
Worm Snakes
Plains King Snake
Copperbelly Water Snake
DiamondBack Water Snake
Midland Water snake
Earth Snake

I'm also from southern Michigan, do you have any tips for a beginning "enthusiast"? All I've ever personally seen is several garters and a water snake.
