    First feeding was a success!

Just thought I would share the nights events. Tonight was my snakes first feeding and to be honest I was a little "antzy" at work anticipating my boys first feeding. I could tell he was looking for food the last couple days. I would go in to change his water bowl and he would stick his snout out of his hide with his tongue goinga mile a minute. Tonight stuck a FT in the cage for the first time and he snatched it up in about a minute. My only complaint is that when he got the mouse in position he pulled it back into his hide. I could see him swallow it because his head was in the door of the hide but I couldnt see his body which was a bummer. Anyway I am very releived that he ate his first offering in his new home. Just thought I would share.

Congrats! And I wouldn't worry too much about him pulling the prey back into his hide. I myself have never observed this behavior because I feed my guys in a tub. It sounds to me like it would be instinctive behavior for BP's though. As I'm sure you've heard, they're ambush hunters, and I would think that (I'm assuming that he's a young BP) bringing his prey back into the hide was because he felt more secure eathing there. Just my $0.02.

Yeah i'm not worried about the fact he pulled his prey into his hide I just wish I could have watched his first feeding in it's entirety,,,,how selfish

Anyway, everything seems to be going great other than the fact he always stays in his cool side hide. His hot side hide temps are about 93 and his cool side hide is about 83 but I havent seen him rest in the hot side yet. He explored it but nothing more than that. He seems great though.

Ours likes the cool side, too. She hasn't eaten yet- we're gonna try tonight!

The breeder said to feed her "either live or F/T"....I'm torn as to which to try.

Re: First feeding was a success!

    Junko,

What were they feeding your snake where you got him? If you can get him to eat FT that would be ideal. Even though this was my snakes first feeding which was FT I can already see the advantages to it. You can stick a bag of frzen mice in the freezer and just take one out to thaw the morning of the feeding day. I enjoy the fact that I don't have to feed my snake live because although I want him to eat I do not enjoy watching another animal (even a mouse) die. Add in the fact that their is a possibility that you snake could get injured from live prey and it's a no brainer. From what I understand many BPs won't eat FT but if yours will I would stick with that and thank your lucky stars.

Good luck! You will feel much better after he eats his first meal. You start feeling like your snakes going to be OK and your doing things right.

Re: First feeding was a success!

    Hi!

She said she was eating BOTH live and F/T...so that is a bit confusing. She was going to send me home with some F/T but we forgot about it until we were 1/2 way home. I'd prefer to feed F/T too, but I do want the first feed to be a success as well... I guess we'll give F/T a go and if it doesn't work we'll try live next time around.

    Thanks!
