Whose Cage Does Breeding Take Place In?

Whose cage should breeding take place in? The males or the female? I have heard it both ways. Ive also heard it should be in the males so he feels more secure, but sometimes it seems like the other way. Which way and why?

Re: Whose Cage Does Breeding Take Place In?

This is my first year, but I've gone with some awesome advice of putting the male into the females cage. I'm a complete newb at this, but I've managed to get two locks so far. So I can say it definitely works for me. Just be sure the the animals in question are in excellent body condition and weights.

We do the same as Christie. Our adult male rotates in with one of our three adult females for 4 days then out for 3 for resting and so on. He's a big yearling at 1,200 grams but we still want to make sure he's not overly stressed by breeding the three females.

I place my male in the females enclosure and have done so 3yrs in a row now.The reason is simple, its alot easier removing the male once the females start ovalating and you take no chances of hurting the female during this time.

Re: Whose Cage Does Breeding Take Place In?

Instinctually, the males are programmed to go looking for the female ... so it seems to make more sense to introduce them into the females cage ... I've been doing it that way for over a decade and it works very well for me, but the reality is that you'd probably do well either way if everything else is dialed in correctly.

I do both...Mainly I rotate the males through the females...
I've had a couple males that do better putting the
    females in their cage...
