So today at the pet store that I work at, I was informed that if nobody took home this blue-tailed skink that it would be 'euthanized'. I thought about it all day, and at the end of the day when nobody else took it, I did. I know it's irresponsible to just take on a reptile, but I just couldn't stand the thought of the poor thing being killed because the other one took its tail off. (Which will grow back anyway, right?)
I have experience with snakes, but nothing with lizards of any sort...so I need some help. I'm determined to put in whatever it takes to give this guy a good life. So please..any caresheets/advice/yelling at me for being irresponsible would be greatly appreciated. I see a lot of info on the Blue-Tongue Skink, but it definitely looks like a different lizard. (The other name for the blue-tailed is five-lined, right?)

Do you have pics? That could be a big help in a positive ID..
That is really messed up for them to want to put him down because of that.. but I don't personally think you were irresponsible at all in this situation; it was them being jerks.

All I know about blue-tailed skinks is that weve got them running out the ying yang around here. If its a blue-tailed skink then you should check your local laws about keeping native species. I dont know if they are native to OH but its illegal to own one here.

They are cute little suckers; they are wild in the Appalachias where I grew up and we would occasionally turn up a clutch of eggs while gardening, which we would then transplant to a flower pot. Nothing cuter than seeing one of those tiny heads popping up out of the soil! We never kept them though...they'd get returned to the area in which they were laid. The tail will grow back, but it will never be as pretty as the original. They drop them very easily...even the stress of handling can cause them to reject it. When it comes off, it will flip around for a while, presumably to distract the potential predator.

Thanks for all of your help everyone! A friend of mine was looking for a lizard, so I let him take it. Now he/she/it has a good home. Its tail is starting to grow back too.

Thats a 5 lined skink, don't know how much your friend knows about them but here is a basic care guide. You can google them and find tons of captive info on them. They are cool lizards.
