Re: Who Says 13 Isn't a Lucky Number?
She looks like a silvered Russian Blue. You should get mostly blacks out of that litter unless she was bred to another RB.

Re: Who Says 13 Isn't a Lucky Number?
OK, so maybe 13 wasn't a lucky number. I just went and peeked in - they all just ate and all have nice thick milkbands, except for one, who was very gray. This one happened to have a piece of tissue stuck on its head, and had died. When I examined it, it looks like the tissue covered its nostrils .
I just reached in and quietly removed it. Now we're down to a dozen squirmy fat babies.

Sharp eyes, even with the bedding that the rats insist on covering their food with! LOL
If you notice in one of the baby pictures, Scarlett's offering the young'un's the nummy pasta already! LOL

Re: Who Says 13 Isn't a Lucky Number?
A dozen babies is very respectable for a first time mom! It looks like Scarlett is doing very well. I'm sorry you lost the one though. Can't wait to see what they look like once they get some fur.
EDIT - I forgot to ask you how you like that squeaking? It's probably not keeping you up from the living room, but it's such a cute little sound. (in the beginning anyway)

Re: Who Says 13 Isn't a Lucky Number?
Sorry about losing the one Robin but 12 is a very nice number for a first litter. The 13th was very likely the runt and the mother may have just rejected it or disposed of it as too weak to survive. It happens and I always figure the female rats instinctively know what is best when it comes to that.
She looks like a good, attentive female and I can see in the one pic that they have nice milkbands so she's doing her job. She's in lovely shape (good for you!) to raise this nice sized litter. Congrats on your first rat litter!
