Re: is it normal for him to squeek?
Well it is possible that he has a respiratory infection.. in which case he needs to see a vet. Sometimes they will make whistling noises when they breathe if they are about to shed their skin.. is he 'in the blue' for a shed?

I've noticed this too with my female. I thought if was something for a while but she never showed any signs of RI so I forgot it. Its almost like an attempted hiss to me.

Whistles when they breath before they are going to shed their skin?
Mine did that whistle thing for awhile but it stopped after a shed.
Are those two things really connected?

Yes, they really can be connected. Little bits of loose, dried skin can get caught in or around the nasal passage and cause a whistling sound.
