Just Got Back From The Vet.....

well he thinks it's a boy, he injected it and popped it, said he doesnt like probbing for fear of reproductive damage. very healthy and 173grams...is that big? i was told it was only 13-14weeks old, he say prob 6-9 months?

anyways very healthy and as of right now he's a boy unless the things he popped out stay the same size as he gets older.

Glad to hear your ball python is healthy.

I do have a few questions though if you don't mind.

What did he inject it with?

Could explain a bit more about this?

Everything will stay the same size in relation to the snake no matter how big they get.

I don't think your vet was very comfortable with popping either and doesn't sound too confident on his findings.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Either the snake is a boy or girl.....there should be no "if".....

Both popping and probing can damage reproductive organs and other body parts if done incorrectly. However, if someone is experienced there should be no worries.

racer, we are not questioning your vet in particular. However, some vets that are not experienced in the treatment of reptiles sometimes treat reptiles....they tend to project their 'expert' advice and info onto the owners without having any knowledge about snakes beyond what a textbook or limited experience dictates. It is always good to check with the ARAV (www.arav.org) to see it the vet is listed. If you have a vet that is listed there.....you should have now worries and know that your snake is in the best possible care

I don't know that I agree with that 100% ... while I think that the arav is a much better start than the phone book, membership in the arav is open and for the price of the membership fee, ANY vet can be listed in their directory no matter what level of reptile experience they have (or think they have).

As you would with seeking ANY type of medical advice ... RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, ask lots of questions, and CHECK REFERENCES!!!

He sounds new. At least he's giving it a shot. In a few years hopefully he'll be much more confident.
