    Question Adult Leopard Gecko?

I just received my first two Leo's. They should be one male and one female. The thing is I thought I was going to determine which one was who by sexing them, but the pre-anal pores of the "male" are not dark like most of the sites say it should be, and I think I can see the Hemipenal Bulges, but I am not too sure.

The guy who sold them to me says they should be 1 month and a half old, and that I should wait to determine their sex, but they look "adult" like to me. Do you think these pictures belong to one month and a half geckos?

This is what I think is the Hemipenile Bulge, but sometimes I doubt... As you can see, no dark pre-anal pores, I can still see them a little, but they can been seen in a female also.

    Re: Adult Leopard Gecko?

those two are definitely older than a month and a half--maybe he meant a year and a half old? although and 1.5 years old they should be more plump and have fatter tails but that could just be the result of not having been fed correctly or fed enough. i'm not sure about the sex of the one that is supposed to be the male--from what i can see in the photo it doesn't really appear to have enlarged pre-anal pores...

here is a quick guide to sexing leos:

    this is a male:

note the enlarged pre-anal pores along with the presence of bulges at the base of the tail.

    -------------

here are two shots of a female:

note that there is still somewhat of a bulge but the pre-anal pores are not enlarged. the cloacal opening curves inward more as opposed to being more flat like that of a male.

    Re: Adult Leopard Gecko?

Well, it appears that I own two female Leos, instead of 1 male and 1 female like I wanted. Bummers
Thin? Do you recon? Then I should keep a watch on the diet...

they aren't terribly thin but could use a little fattening up. mealworms, crickets and or silkworms should do the job. you can also offer pinkies (one pinkie per gecko) every couple of weeks if they will take them.

    Re: Adult Leopard Gecko?

Well, I did manage to get a hand on Canned Silkworms, but I need a vibrating dish so they simulate movement to get the geckos interested.

I am feeding them live crickets, gut-loaded and calcium dusted.

I can get live Super-worms as well. Are Super-womrs Ok for Leos? I haven't read nothing about it.

    Re: Adult Leopard Gecko?

some people feed superworms but i personally don't recommend them. they can actually bite the gecko on the inside of the mouth (or elsewhere) when they are trying to eat them. my vet once told me a horror story about a chameleon that this happened too and it refused to eat for a very long time afterwards, firstly because it had a bad reaction to the bite causing its tongue to swelled and require treatment, secondly because it then seemed to be afraid of any food at all because it must have associated eating with pain.

i used to feed them before my vet told me this story and i could easily see that the leos would try not to let the mouth of the worm touch them if possible--one of them would even squint and flinch and try to grab the worm from a distance, as if he had been bit before and was attempting to avoid another.... so yeah, i just feed mealies and crickets right now.
