Provent-a-Mite ....best thing you can get to treat him.

In the meantime, you can get Reptile Relief from a local store. Or a soak in a shallow tub of water with a drop of liquid dish soap. And wash out the cage thoroughly. That will kill the adult bugs you are seeing. The PaM will take care of the eggs as well.

Chances are, the snake had eggs on it when you brought it home and they've hatched and just now become big enough for you to see.

EDIT: And for future purchases, always treat the newcomer's enclosure with PaM...that will kill off any existing bugs and prevent new ones from hatching.

I was a reptile shop today that specializes in snakes. She told me she uses Ivory Soap, because it kills the mites, and can coat the eggs and kill them as well. Anybody ever hear this?

Re: OMG Pick this thread i need a lil help!!!!

i use provent-a-mite (or P.A.M.) and it takes care of the mites and it's just so darned simple to use.

i spray the cage, put in the aspen, water dish and hides and then the snake and VOILA no more mites.

you don't have to do anything else. i always use P.A.M. on every new snake coming into the house and i know that IF they had mites (as two of my new additions have) then they don't have them for long!

(the other reason i love using it is because i know it's safe - unlike some other treatments)

I've never heard of that. It might be ok to use Ivory in the cage, but I sure as heck wouldn't risk putting it right on the snake unless it had been suggested and verified by a highly experienced person that I seriously trusted.

(Working in a "specialized" reptile shop comes nowhere near making me trust someone....many of them are just as bad as "regular" pet stores.)

The soap idea is just a little something extra you can do to drown more adults mites faster in a soak. It does not kill any of the eggs and won't even get every adult. Its just something you can do to keep the # of adult mites on your snake down while you wait on a better treatment, such as Provent-a-mite.
