New snakey is home!
We brought him (?) home this evening. He's a pretty guy, even though he seems to still be getting ready to shed. It was hard for our daughter to come to grips with the fact that he needs to stay in his tank for the next few days to aclimate, but in a few weeks she won't know the difference.
She settled on the name Ekans for this one. Some of you may be young enough to catch the reference, and some of you may have kids who can explain it you.
Here's a pic:
He went straight for his hidey hole when he hit the cage, and as been curled up in there ever since, with one little venture out to sniff his water bowl. I'm sure he'll open up, though.

Hey beautiful little guy you have there. Thats a pretty big tank for such a little guy, you might wanna get him a hide or two more. And your definitely going to have to monitor the humidity if you live in an area with low humidity, screen tops are a pain.
Best of luck though, he's handsome

Re: New snakey is home!
I just put saran wrap over mine; works great to retain humidity.
Just make sure there are some types of locks to hold the lid on! Cute snake.

Re: New snakey is home!
I'm not overly concerned with humidity here. It's been raining (finally!), and we tend to stay fairly humid most of the time. I've been keeping a blanket over one half of the screen top, which seems to keep the temp on the warm side around 90º, according to the cheap suction-cup aquarium therm I have for now. Not sure how much I trust that one. I'm going to try to get to Wal-Mart today to pick up an Acu-Rite.
We took him out for a bit today, and while he doesn't seem to have shed yet, he was being pretty calm. We put him back in the cage, and he finally started his exploring. He rubbed his face against the log for a bit, and appeared to be doing the same on the pictures of rocks on the back, and slithered hither and yon before curling up underneath the back of the log. Just a little bit of him peaking out, so I suspect he likes it as a hide.
I'm assuming the head rubbing is shedding behavior.

Re: New snakey is home!
When I switched from the cheapo therms to the digital I couldn't believe how off the temps actually were. Hope he sheds clean for you.
Good luck.

Re: New snakey is home!
Yeah, me too. I finally found someplace reasonably close by that has the Acu-Rite, so I'm heading out to get it make sure the tank is right for him to finish his shed.
