Getting him out of the cage

Giovanni is almost always under one or the other of his flower pots. I very rarely see him outside of them lately, even in the late evening and night. Most often when he is awake he just pokes his head out the top hole.

When I go to handle him, should I pick up the flower pot in order to get to him, or just wait for him to come out on his own? I'm concerned about stressing him by removing his hide, but I'm also concerned that I won't get him tamed if I wait to handle him on the one night a week he actually comes out.

They do tend to hide a lot - I have always just gone ahead and lifted the hide up and put it to one side. I talk to Emily while I do this so she knows (hopefully) who I am and stroke her a couple of times then pick her up with both hands - so she feels secure.

I usually lift the hide. He'll just flick its tongue and let me pick him up. Mine never balls up anymore, either.
