Here are pics of Miranda and her recently deceased boyfriend Sam. Soon after these pics were taken, we had a a problem with coccidia. The vet said it more than likely came from the crix they eat seeing as though I have never had this coccidia issue before with any of my animals. I had all of my lizards tested for it when my fat tails came up with it, and the rest are fine... unfortunately, even though the coccidia was caught very quickly, Sam died due to it, but Miranda, who I have had for ALOT of years, who is a LTC pulled through and seems well now.
Miranda is the normal looking fat tail, Sam was my striped fat tail. Eventually, I will find Miranda another mate like Sam.

wat is coccidia, and how does it pass from crickets to herps?
Wish I could answer that for ya, all I know is over a yr ago I quit using crix for all my crix eating herps b/c of the fear of coccidia based on things I had read online, however, I was unable to stop using the crix for my fat tails as thats all they had ever eaten in my care.

What a shame to lose Sam. Not only because I know you loved him but he was such a lovely looking fat tail. Great pics though of both of them, thanks for sharing!

coccidia is an extremely contagious life threatening intestinal parasite. if a cricket comes in contact with feces containing the parasite it can pass the parasite on to whatever eats it or comes in contact with it. this is an important reason why you should get your crickets from a good clean source and not take an uneaten cricket from one animal's enclosure and put it in another.
bearded dragons can actually host a small amount of coccidia parasites and be completely unaffected by them and not ever require treatment, but if a cricket comes in contact with the beardie's feces and then comes in contact with or is eaten by another lizard it can pass the parasite on and become deadly to its new host. basic care and hygiene can usually prevent this from happening if you are attentive to the issue.
