new rat owner
Hello again everyone!
I am a first time rat owner.
I bought two females today. 1 biege female and a black rex dumbo female.
I dont think I plan on using either girl for breeding since I have only have two ball pythons and they both are at different prey stages in their diet.
Funny note (nothing to really do with this thread): I was interested in a female and while checking her out I notice in the "female"cage there was a male who got mixed in. I obviously passed on that whole selection in that one tank just in case he had his way with any of the ladies and I would end up with a preg. rat and some pups. Wouldnt it be turdish if the same mistake happend to the tank I got the tan rat from. I didnt get a good look at all the rats. Yikes!
Anyways,
Is there anything I should expect?
Any tips on how to keep my girls happy and healthy?
"Erica

Re: new rat owner
Congrats on the new rattie pets. They really do make lovely pets if handled regularily (and your hands don't smell like their treats LOL). Becky's rat mix sticky is wonderful and you can adjust that recipe easily for the volume of food for your two females. As far as treats I like to give mine a weekly treat of left over ends of bread dipped in a dab of olive oil. They love it and it makes an adult rats more rough coat as soft as a baby again. Rats are omnivores so can basically enjoy anything you like to eat within reason. Nice body weight is good but avoid obese rats as it shortens their life spans considerably. Bones from your dinner are usually a well loved treat and good for wearing down their teeth as well as frozen peas in the summer. They love them and it's a nice frozen treat on a hot day.
Names...hmmmm....Bertha & Gertrude (Bert and Gert for short) LOL. Here's a link for petnames that I just love. It has a really nice search engine.
