Welcome to the forum, by the way!

IMHO opinion - the ideal set up is the one most convenient for you, the keeper that achieves that husbandry requirements of the ball python is ideal!

For my snakes - tubs are ideal. For others, nicely set up glass vivs are ideal! Decide what you'd like to do, ask the forum and those of us that use one or the other can give you good tips!

Welcome to BPNet! Ideal setup would also be one that is up and running without the snake in it but with everything else (substrate, heating sources, full water dish) for a couple of days so that the temps and humidity are stable.

    Re: ideal cage setup

I'd switch out the lamps for an under tank heater (flexwatt with a thermostat is excellent) a thermostat is NEEDED with an under tank heater.

Lamps remove humidity like crazy, so an UTH will help a lot there. Also, cover most of the lid with something like saran wrap to preven humidity from escaping out the top. Provide a larger water dish also, and a substrate like cypress mulch will hold humidity better.

Also, get yourself a digital hygrometer (humidity reader) you can easily get a thermometer/hygrometer at target/walmart.
