Possibly might be getting a Red Tail Boa

So I was looking in "The Recycler" which is my cities local paper. A guy is selling a Red Tail Boa. Says its 3.5 feet long, with complete setup. I'd like to look into getting the snake. He says its sweet, and well taken care of. However, IF I get the snake, it's going to the vet A.S.A.P. just for a standard check up just to make sure. When I emailed, I asked if its WC or CB or had any previous medical conditions. Now, if WC, should I worry about any parasites? Even though I'll take it to the vet for a check up.

WC or not, I'd take a fecal sample to the vet for an exam. Be sure to check carefully for mites before you take the snake home. Don't want to spread those things.. nasty!

Great idea! He just emailed me back. He said it had mites when her first got it, but had it taken care of by a vet. Still, I'll play the safe card and get a fecal sample and take it to a vet. He also said its in a 20 gallon tank. But it's 3.5 feet long. That tank is way too small for a snake that big isn't it?

I would lose the fish tank, try and shave a few bucks and get a simple sterilite tub, newspaper and water bowl. Before paying $1.00, check the mouth and nostrils for any signs of RI, check the eyes, scales and cloaca. Feel the snake out as it moves around, make sure it looks and feels good.

Then when your convinced it is healthy, take it to the vet and give it a few weeks/months quarantine.

    Good Luck!

    I second what ssscales said.

A 3.5' snake can live in a 2.5-3' cage. A 20 gallon isn't too ridiculous.. though I hate tanks. Sterilite tub is much better!

I decided I'm gonna hold off. I've got 3 already, and I want to focus on them ATM. I have plenty of time to get more snakes later on. I'm still somewhat new to this. I dont want to get in over my head.

Sounds like a wise decision to me. When you're still new, it's a good idea to stick with animals that have a very good chance of being healthy anyway, not potentially sick animals.
