african rock python
i just rescued an african rock python, from a pretty bad home and i was wondering if they are even legal to have here in the states, i know they are pretty protected and i need to find a good home for this one as i am not sure if i have enough experience to be able to handle him if he gets any bigger.i have also heard they tend to be very aggressive and arent really supposed to be good captive. if anyone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated as this is a very beautiful animal and i want to assure its good health and welfare.thank you

Re: african rock python
They are legal in the US, but not in every state/city. They are certainly not a beginner's snake. I know Smulkin here has one, but I know of no others.
They are sometimes aggressive, not all, but they have a killer feeding response or so I have heard.. and any snake that can grow over 20' and 200lbs is not something to take lightly.
In the right hands, they make excellent captives.

They are legal in the states - but you'll need to check your state and local laws. I beleive the smaller southern form (sebae natalensis) MIGHT be protected in parts of southern Africa. The much larger sebae sebae is not.
They can get huge - and they have been known to have iffy dispositions.
How big is it? How long have you had it and where did it come from? Under no circumstances will that be a one-person job when it gets bigger. I have a female around 9' - she gets nervous on being held but otherwise is fairly calm for an AfRock. I would not consider her docile or laid back by any means though.

Wow Smulkin, your baby is a growin' (love to see some pics)
Anyhow, Best thing to do if you are not comphtorable, is call around for help, check your local herp rescues and societies.
Vet offices (herp vets if you have any in your area). I'm sure once someone here's about it being a rock and that you may not be fully comphy with the idea they would be likely to help.
Let me know if you need help finding someone to help you. I'll have my people call your people..lol
None the less I may have a few folks out that way that could help.
