Rat snake rescue!
A friend brought this sweet rat snake to me in a pillow case to rehome. We have lots of acres of woods! He was so docile. Just a sweet, gentle natured guy/girl.   I'm sure he loves his new forever home out there. This is a pic of me showing it to my little ones.

Well, re-homing is better than if they'd killed it, but it's detrimental to re-home snakes since they have to learn their way around & may continue to try to find their way
"home". They learn & remember where to brumate in the winter & where to shelter for inclement weather so they aren't killed by heat, cold, etc. so it's a disadvantage
to have to find new places, but black rat snakes are pretty smart & adaptable snakes, so I hope he does alright & likes his new woods. That looks like a very healthy one
too.  My biggest snakes are 2.2 Florida rat snakes (close "cousins" of the black rat snakes, mostly a color variation). Wonderful that this snake was docile & you were
able to show your kids.  And at least this was the ideal season to re-locate this snake...he/she has all summer & fall to figure things out.

I'm sure with 56 acres, a pond and a creek, he will find a nice place to burrow and plenty to eat!

Me too...I love the intelligence of rat snakes...they know when they're safe with us, & they're much easier to keep than the BPs in terms of feeding & temps/humidity...not fussy. Sounds like you need a rat snake some day.

Eastern black rats rehome very readily. We pull a lot of out people's garages; AC has us on speed dial because they don't deal with wildlife. We actually have a list of local farmers who want them for rodent control.

I think I do.  And a corn snake, and a spotted python, and a ambelobe panther chameleon and a boa that doesn't get huge and maybe a garter snake. I've fallen down the rabbit hole! I blame it all on my little girl! She started this mess and now I'm obsessed with learning all about them. The next will be a rat snake or a corn snake after today's experience!

 If it's any consolation, no one told me either when I got the first one 35 years ago...
BTW, rat snakes are great climbers & lots of fun to watch when you put branches in their tanks. (IMO glass tanks work best, w/ screen tops
for good ventilation). I just cut branches to fit diagonally (with a small jig saw) & criss-cross them in the middle (so they're wedged in place)
..these snakes are so graceful on branches.

but she knew better and told him no and that she would bring it to me. They have baby birds he keeps going after. This was the 3rd time so she had to bring it. I have fallen in love though. I can't believe the temperament of him!
