Unusual baby rat
Ok, so I bred a normal coat/ear black berkshire female that I raised myself with a normal coat/ear black hooded male with a granite-ish stripe and a star in the middle of his forehead.
In the litter there were 7.. but the odd thing is that one of the babies has wavy whiskers (not so curly as a rex) and a patch of rex curls in the middle of his back.
How'd this happen? Rex is dominant.. but this rat doesn't look quite rex.

Re: Unusual baby rat
Probably a velveteen. I have a female like that. Whiskers are slightly curly, eyebrows look like old-man eyebrows. The coat is usually wavy and softer than usual. I will try to take some pictures of Amelia, she's a charcoal blazed capped dumbo velveteen rex. Very pretty

Re: Unusual baby rat
Sounds like a pretty ratty baby Shelby. I have almost the same type rats breeding right now. Both my females are Berkshires. The one female is a Berkshire Blaze with a lovely dark chocolate/white coat color (normal coat/ears). The new male is a pretty standard black/white hooded rat (really nice thick stripe though on his back). I'll have to let you know what I get out of them when the time comes. My other female btw is also a Berkshire (no blaze though, normal coat/ears) and is a really nice sort of steel grey/brownish coloring with a white underbelly and legs. Should be fun to see what they produce.

Re: Unusual baby rat
I've heard of velveteen..
Is it recessive then? Must be since neither parent exhibit any sort of curl.. neither did the parents of the mother.
