    My First Snake Rack Ever!

    Hello everyone!

I am happy to get back into the hobby, well, it won't be until another month, but I wanted to be prepared.

So one Sunday morning, I was bored and looking for something to do, and I said to myself "Hi, Let me build a snake rack." I have been thinking about getting back into the hobby for a while now, so I figured this would be my perfect excuse to slowly start my collection. So I walked into Target, asked for a piece of paper, and started drawing my blueprint after finding the tub size I needed. Right after my visit to Target, I drove across the street to Home Depot to purchase the wood, in which they cut to my needs. So now, I have my beautiful snake rack (I'm proud) with minor imperfections. To reduce cost, I decided to go with plywood, per my research (quick search) AFTERWARDS, I realized that plywood was not the best option(for heating purposes), but I could seal the wood with a water based sealant (I will be using a Mini-wax Polycrylic Protective Finish) to withstand the heat. Now, my real issue, is that there is a small gap on two of the levels, the very top one and the very bottom, I would like to know if anyone would have any recommendations on how to fix this. I was considering of maybe using a very thin piece of pegboard, but I'm not sure if they are even made thin enough.

    Any recommendations?

I am super excited, and can't wait.
    PS: Happy Holidays

I could not figure out how to include the pictures in the post, so I added a link to my photo bucket account.

For adding photos, you want to copy the link to the right of the photo in Photobucket that says "IMG". If you copy and past it into a post, your image should pop up.

Congrats on deciding to get back into the hobby. There are a lot of new genes at play now and many that were once super expensive that have dropped in price, so you'll have a good selection to choose from.

2 tips from an experienced rack builder.

    1) this is ESSENTIAL! the space above your rack tubs is too large and I guarantee you, your snakes will escape the tubs easily if they want to. The space needs to be very small unless you have tub lids, which are cumbersome.

    2) not as essential... that plywood will get moist and warp or maybe even mold. So what I did was waterproof the boards with deck paint.looks pretty good though.

Also you might want to install shelf support strips on either side, it makes for a sturdier shelf under each tub.

Looking at the pics the gap seems to be around 2 millimeters? Which should be fine - I used the thinkness of 2-3 cd's to set the gap space when building mine.

Looking at the tub sizes used and depending on the heat tape used it may work with a central notched shelf support as well. I agree it is a good idea though.

Also how are you planning on "locking" the tubs in to avoid accidental opening? I used corner blocks swiveling at one end. Then again I have neither cats nor children.

It looks like much more than 2 millimeters to me, but maybe I’m seeing the photo wrong.
i agree that 2 millimeters is good
