Substrate
Questions, have been using reptile prime. For some reason, it didn't seem to hold the humidity like I wanted. Using tubs in rack with belly heat. Temps 86 to 90 hot side. Cool side 79 to 81. Using Accurite for temp and humidity. Also checking with temp gun.
Decided to try Reptichip in my tubs, mixed up about half the block, being careful to not over wet it, put some in a couple of tubs in my rack.
It feels damp, not wet. Now 24 hrs later my humidity is still running around 99%. I haven't put any snakes in yet. how long does it usually take for the humidity to level out?
Also, I mixed up more than I needed, how do you store the extra? Closed container? Vented container or just in a tote?

Substrate
Can't help you really , stopped using that stuff as it was so messy and difficult to manage .
I use Orchid bark ( maybe known as reptilebark in the States .. as it looks great and natural, holds as much (or as little ) humidity as you need AND it enhances the colours of your snakes

Re: Substrate
I've never used it so I don't know about your first question but as far as the extra, I would think you'd need to dry it out as quickly as possible and never store anything damp or moist in a closed container unless you're trying to grow mold

It's just to show how dark substrate enhances the colours of light coloured snakes ... I see so many stunning snakes kept on that ghastly aspen stuff which acts in the opposite way and is like camouflage ..

Don't like Eco-earth to much so I knew I wouldn't like Reptile Prime. The Reptichip seems a little on the dusty side but the reptibark seems good. Like others say you can get the humidity just right with this stuff, plus it' makes spot cleaning easy too. Have my guys on aspen right now but will be going back to the reptibark in a few days.

Do not put damp substrate in a snake cage unless that snake specifically requires conditions similar to a tree frog. If your enclosure is not holding humidity well, the substrate is the least of the concern. Reptile Prime is excellent like all other similar coconut fiber to hold enough humidity while not creating an unhealthy surface environment.
Make sure your humidity gauges are accurate and make sure you use them long enough to acclimate to the tub, not just to dip in and get a quick reading. Make sure your tubs do not have excessive air flow and that your room keeping them in is not excessively low in humidity.
