    Angry Heat Rocks

What is the point of heat rocks anymore? I mean, are there ANY herps that can safely use a heat rock? I know that I would never use one for any herp that I ever get. Why the crap are these things still on the market at all if it is so widely understood that they are dangerous for our scaley little (and not so little) friends!!??
Life is like a game of poker. You can play each hand to the best of your ability but you are still going to run into a bad beat from time to time. What matters is how you handle it. Do you go on tilt or can you maintain your composure & rebuild your stack?

As long as people use it for the wrong purpose, businesses will continue to sell them. I can just see it: Director of Akme Heat Rock. "Oh my gosh, it turns out that our heat rocks are harmful to Herps! Lets pull them off the shelves and warn all the customers who bought them!"

    Re: Heat Rocks

I do wish I had a digital camera at hand today so you could all see the belly of the RTB we just took in yesterday. We'll get him well again and then he's off to Texas to SatanicIntention (Becky).

His whole belly is one big mess of pink and red....a pretty sad sight for such a lovely big snake. I've got a call into the herp vet we use. Thank goodness his skin is not worse but it still should NEVER have happened. I warned and warned his previous owner to get rid of this huge heat rock, tried to get her to read websites....I guess it just didn't get through her head in time...now this animal is paying the price!

Of course the heat rock is gone (as well as the huge water tub that wasted most of his available floor space) and with care he'll be fine. It was caught in time I think, at least from what I can see online of how much worse it could have been.

Please please spread the word to never expose a living creature to these pieces of junk! They don't even have an on/off switch or anyway to adjust the level of heat! Awful, horrible things to promote as safe for reptiles of any sort.

    Re: Heat Rocks

These terrible things are still sold here in the UK too I'd never use one of these. Our little snakes (Cornsnakes and Milksnakes) are on heat mats which are thermostatically controlled. Our Boas and our Royals have ceramic heat lamps which have safety guards round them and are also thermostatically controlled. Here's Byron's viv (with him showing off for the camera again LOL). You can see the ceramic bulb is safely behind bars!!!

I'd never have anything that could be even remotely dangerous to my snakes.

Heat rocks are only good when you cut off the cord and decorate your garden.

Mine were not accurate at all. It wasn't until I got the digital AcuRite therm/hygrometer that I saw just HOW off they were (by as much as 10 degrees) in my set up.
