Seldom but big VS Often but small

So guys, I'm currently feeding Pylox rats that are slightly bigger than his girth. I feed him every week now, but I used to feed him mice that are almost twice the girth of his body every 10-12 days. Can anyone list the pros and cons of both of those feeding methods so I can feed him more efficiently?

There’s actually a Snake Bytes episode on YouTube that compares multiple ways of feeding your snake and which promotes the most growth. I guess your answer would be determined by what you mean by “efficiency”. If you’re wanting the most growth possible, a larger food item once a week will do that.

You want to see a little bit of a bump at the largest part, but honestly double the size is a little large. I’d say shoot for a prey item that’s roughly 10-15% of his body weight and do that once a week. Just eyeball it against his largest part and make sure it isn’t too extreme.

If I remember correctly, Pylox is still rather young. Most BP owners stick to that once a week regimen til they approach adulthood and then start pulling back to 10-14 day feedings. Of course everything is subject to change with the possibility of going off feed.

I think both methods works well. It's really just a matter of preference. I vary prey types, sizes, and feeding frequency quite often.

Just to add that the only way to efficiently feed any snake is to monitor their weight and adjust accordingly. Without knowing the weight of the snake and prey you are just guessing and that can lead to over feeding which is never a healthy thing.
