The problem I am having is that the little pegs that keep the tubs from coming out tend to fascinate my darn cat. She is always knocking them out.

My fear is eventually she will also get the tub out too.

How can I secure the tubs. What else could I put in those peg holes.

I currently have strips of Velcro taping my tubs shut.

Any suggestions? Unfortunately I can't lock the cat out of the room the rack is in.

You train the cat that the rack is off limits. What's more important? The welfare of your snakes or the amusement of your cat?

If nothing else get something similar to a fireplace screen and place that infront of hte racks so it is physically off limits to the cat. The last thing you want is to come home to a half eaten snake.

Is it a possibility to drill the holes completely through and use cotter pins or carabiners? I was also wondering if creating a screen front could work, or you could vary the size of the screen from mesh fabric like on backpacks to really large gaps like chicken wire or a baby gate. Could you distract your cat with one of those treat puzzles? If the cat gets tired out through play and a reward, would the unsuccessful snake hunt behavior lose it's appeal? Good luck!

I don't believe the cat is after the snakes. She was attracted to the little pegs that rattle in their holes. Typical cat behavior.

A fireplace screen will not stop her.

I've taken steps to secure my tubs from her possibly getting them open but was simply wondering if someone else had experienced this and had a better solution.

My snakes, like all my pets are better cared for than most children and don't appreciate the negative tone in a certain response.

I've addressed the safety issue for my snakes immediately.

Just always looking for better ideas/options.

My apologies if you took it as I was insulting you. That was not my intention and never is when I make replies like this. I still hold firm that cats do not belong near snakes regardless of their pet status. Cats are alpha predators and can and will eat a snake given half a chance. It is their nature and no amount of love and cuddles will ever change that.

I completely agree about cats nature. But by the same token, I work all day, I can't be home to supervise the ca t 24/7.

Just want to be clear that my snakes are not in harm's way. Using the Velcro straps are securing the tubs but more of an inconvenience for me.

I will shop today for a hook of some sort that may work better.

No worries- I am probably too hyper-sensitive. I pride myself on the level of care I provide for my pets. They want for nothing.

It's hard to gauge emotion/intent from the written word.

Snakes are alpha predators too, it is a matter of size. If you had an anaconda, then the cat would be in serious danger!

SDA is just saying it is a bit dangerous to have snakes/cats housed together. If/when I get a cat, I will be locking it out of the room where the snakes are. I keep them in a bedroom, that way they can be shutoff from the rest of the house, and also I can keep the ambient temps higher in that room with a space heater. Works fantastic.
