    Fourth attempt

He keeps trying to eat it from the middle -_- I tried re-warming up just the head but... still nothing.

    This is the fourth attempt.

His food response was otherwise very strong. We just need a little direction.

Almost all of my snakes have tried to eat a rat in a dumb way. I just leave them alone and they eventually get it figured out.

    Fourth attempt

My male Snow Boa smells the jumbo rat all over the body until it gets to the head then starts to chomp

Then again I also have couple of Royals who get confused - start at the wrong end and struggle to wrestle their way past the tail - sorted those by chopping the tails off - sorted

    Re: Fourth attempt

Mine spent his first year taking lots of extra time to eat his rats because he tended to try the ear first, then move to the middle, then the butt before finally finding the head. I wouldn't take it out to warm the head if I were you unless he's actually leaving it. As long as he's still working on figuring out, just let him work his way around to it. Mocking, however, is not at all disturbing to them and I engaged in it freely.

It takes Pua a good 20+ minutes to find the head of his meal. He kind of likes to admire his meal and smell it before trying to decide if starting at the butt would be a good change of pace, or the middle, and then coming to terms and realizing the head is where to start. Then he "chews" on the head a bit, before actually starting to swallow the rat. Idk of there's something wrong with him, but maybe he was dropped as an egg

I have one that is an even bigger idiot. He does that routine then still eats it butt first. Incidentally his name is dumb-dumb.

Sometimes, if you get them to strike right on the nose, they'll skip the whole poking and prodding step and just go straight to swallowing. This might come in handy for your boy while he figures things out.

Mine always acts like I haven't fed her in months and she's starving, doesnt give me much chance to even present it to her and is already striking and grabbing it any which way, which is often right in the middle.

like....good job fool, now you get to spend a half hour trying to line it up right! I'm glad to have such a good eater, but .... jeez, calm down
