    Just another new guy

I finally broke down and got my first snake. I tossed around the idea for months and finally pulled the trigger last weekend on a fire YB ball. So far everything is going good with him. My only concern has been with feeding him. I picked him up from a local reptile show and weighed him at my buddies house. He weighed 275g. After I got him home that night and put in his tank he waited about an hour before taking a grumpy. Anyways I got a small frozen and live rat from the local pet shop to feed him. I took their advice that he could eat it. When I got home they were obviously too large. So my daughter now has a pet rat. The next day my wife picked me up a large frozen mouse and he ate it just fine. On the package it said it was approximately 19g. My question is is it large enough for him? I planned on once a week feedings, but I'm not against every 5 days if that would be better. With the research I've done it seems 10-15% of their body weight should be feed. I'm mostly concerned I maybe underfeeding my poor buddy.

    Re: Just another new guy

I built a rack back in February. I just need buy a Ranco, finish installing heat tape and fill her up. I'm not in a huge hurry though. I've been trying to do as much research and planning as I possibly could before getting my first snake. I have a really addictive personality when it comes to my hobbies. So I planned accordingly and left room for some expansion. At one time I have over 30 aquariums in my house that I kept my fish and coral collection in so I tend to get a bit out of hand. Lol

A 19g mouse seems small, think you're in the larger rat pup 30g+ or smaller weaned rat ~40g range. Welcome.

    Re: Just another new guy

Thank you guys. I will try to locate a bigger meal locally. I know I can order them online, but with only one growing snake I'm afraid he will outgrow a package of pups or weaned rats before he finishes them.
