good turtles
Anyone have any experience with small tortoises? I'm looking to get some sort of new reptile but can't decided what i want to get. things i might be okay with would be some sort of smaller tortoise or some kind of blue tongue skink or tegu. What are some good starter tortoises that stay relativly small and have moderate care requirements? thanks!

Re: good turtles
One thing you may want to consider is life span. While a BTS may live 15 to 20 years, some tortoises have life spans upwards of 100 years or more. So unless your planning on passing your pet tortoise down as a family heirloom, you may want to take it into consideration.

No such thing as a good tortoise in my book. My daughter wanted a Russian that I have been stuck taking care of for the last couple of years. That one animal stinks more than all my ball pythons put together even though it is cleaned every day. Pees every time it is taken out. Just not a fun animal to keep in my opinion.

We keep tortoises. They are outdoor reptiles. We have a giant sulcata that we've raised for 15 years now. If you want small, a western hermann or egyptian would be great- although, an egyptian is a bit difficult to care for. Russians can be fun, but they're really common. As rlditmars said, expect to pass the tortoise on to the next generation. The good thing about western hermann and egyptians is that they are so rare, you'll always be able to find a good home for them when you can no longer care for them. I doubt they'll lose any sleep over it. These little guys cost upwards of $500, though.
