What type of substrate do you use?

newspaper in the summer, aspen in the winter. I've used the repticarpet stuff and it works great...but you can't beat seeing a huge poo in a tub and thinking "oh it will take 30 seconds to pull this out and put a clean newspaper back in" like I just did LOL

Ditto...that is exactly how I feel. Repticarpet was too much work..ha ha

I'm using Newspaper right now, it's not very nice too look at though so I am thinking of switching to aspen.

That is why you need you need to get some chinese newspaper. I swipe these from the free classifieds setups at the entrance of walmart...ha ha....they add character to the setup and are free

They have some that are spanish too.....Anything besides looking at the same english writting will make it look different.....ha ha...and it keeps me from reading the newspaper when I am trying to clean

I use newspaper, cypress mulch(baked to dry it out and to get rid of bugs), Sani-Chips aspen from Harlan Teklad, and papertowels. I use whatever is convenient at the moment(or whatever I have on hand).

When you say "baked", exactly how do you do that? If you don't mind me asking... I've always been curious about how that's done... And doesn't it stink up your oven if you do it there?

Toss it onto a cookie sheet or whatever, pop it in the oven at like 300 degrees and leave it in there for, oh, half an hour or so. Keep an eye on it and stir it up a few times during the baking process and that should get rid of anything potentially harmful.

LoL, I usually leave mine in for a good couple of hours(5+). It has to be completely dry before I consider it "done". I put as much as I need in large cake pans and just toss it every half hour or so to make sure the heat thoroughly penetrates the wood. It is a pain sometimes since it takes so long to prepare. It doesn't smell up the kitchen though, only a slight "woody" smell in the oven.

Ahhh... I was imagining the smell being more like a soggy bar-b-que pit!! But I guess it couldn't be much if any worse than a fireplace... And I love fireplaces!!

I am using aspin right now, but am planning on switching to repticarpet when Loki gets big enough to go into his large enclosure. I have a plan for the pain in the but to clean thing. I baught enough that I can line the tank, then still have enough to line the tank when the other gets soiled. That way, I can take the soiled outside and hoserdown. We shal see how that works one day (Sigh) I cant wait to get Loki into that larg enclosure, It looks so much better than that little 10gal geto tank he is in right now. Oh well, I guess time will alow it.
