Which type of acrylic is best to use in an DIY enclosure?

I'm in the process of making a display enclosure(s) and was wondering what type of acrylic would be the best? I've never made an enclosure before or really worked with acrylic so I don't know which would be the sturdiest and look the best.

I was thinking either this:

In your own opinion, which would be the best for an enclosure and to drill/solder holes in?

One nearly 3 times thicker than the other, even at that it is still less than a 1/4in thick, guess it depends on the size of the display if that will suffice. My show displays are 1/4in but they also are small and have tons of support, I'm really not sure how well a real display cage would hold up. Also an all acrylic cage would have some of the disadvantages of an aquarium cage.

My suggestion would be to use 1/2in pvc, an already proven material and just make a frame for the acrylic window.
