Amount of white on a calico

Does the amount of white on a calico increase or intensify as the mature, or will they keep the same amount of white that they express as a hatchling?

Most of the hatchlings that I've seen start out looking more pink then white and the pink areas will intensify into a brighter white as they mature. They won't gain any more area, it'll just become more defined.

I guess while I'm at it... another question...
Is the amount of white hereditary? Low white passes on low white to it's offspring, and high white will produce mostly high white? I have heard the amount of white is random, but I have seen breeders hold back and selectively breed for a level of 'whiteness' they prefer.

As far as I know it's random. People always have the tendency to keep the best looking examples of the morph 'just in case'
