Herpstat Question
My girlfriend and I are working on a little 2 tank setup. We will have matching heating panels and matching UTH, but my tank is 6 inches taller than hers for now. In a year or so she will have the same tank as I. Which version of the herpstat will I need to make this as simple as possible, and what would I need to make it work? It seems a little silly to have 4 t-stats when I see a video of a guy running 3 racks off of one herpstat 4

You could use a herpstat 2 and run uth off one port and rhp's off the other.
You would have to check temps and find a balance so you aren't cooking or freezing one snake but the 6" difference shouldn't create a drastic change in temp.
Or you could always buy a herpstat 4 and have an individual probe for each heat source, allowing yourself room to expand without dropping another 200$ for a second thermostat if you continue to build your collection.

Seeing that you are regulating UTH, the size of the enclosure doesn't matter.
Make sure the mats are identical.

Buy a Herpstat 2. That will run 2 cages fine and then just wait for the new Herpstat 6 that Dion from Herpstat mentioned Unless the cages are exact, I wouldn't try to run 1 cage off the other. That's just asking for something to go wrong. And having extra t-stats is fine. I have a Herpstat 1 and Heprstat 2 and I will probably buy a Herpstat 4 or 6 when it comes out. You can always sell off your older ones online or keep them as backups if something goes wrong. Not to mention, I guess the firmware on them is upgradable as Dion said so they never really become obsolete.

I just saw the heat panel part.....
There might be a little difference there.
Meet in the middle on the temperature difference.

How would this work with a herpstat 2? Would I plug the 2 RHP into a power strip and plug that into 1 port on the herpstat , and then do the same with the 2 UTH and another power strip?

Herpstat 2 has 2 power plugs and 2 probe plugs in the back. One to control one unit and one to control another unit. You just plug say the RHP from cage one into the plug labeled 1 in the back of the Herpstat. Then place the probe for that plug into the cage. Then you plug RHP two for cage two into the second plug on the Herpstat and place the second probe into cage two. On the from on the Herpstat you will see 2 temps labeled "1" and "2". Adjust as needed. If you are trying to run 2 RHP AND 2 UTH, I wouldn't use a Herpstat 2 as you have no real way to place the probe to get an accurate reading for the RHP and UTH as you want the probe on the outside taped to the UTH but you want the probe inside the cage close to the RHP to get that dialed in.
Ideally you want one probe for one unit. I mean I guess you could 2 Herpstat 2s or one Herpstat 4 to run the setup you want but me personally, I don't bother using UTHs as I use about 2" of aspen for substrate so I just run RHPs.

Thank you,
if you only use RHP, how do you keep a hot spot? I figured the panel would raise the ambient temp while the UTH made a hot spot.

That's exactly right. I'd do things the right way and get a Herpstat 4 if your budget allows you. Or you can find one used. That's what I did through the classifieds section.

BPs and boas don't need a hot spot per say assuming you have correct ambient temps. But if you really want a hot spot with only using a RHP, you can put something down under the RHP on the floor of the cage like a rounded rock or a 1x1 slate tile. Then dial it in with a temp gun and shift it off to the side or whatever to get it the perfect temp. Me personally I just use 2-3" deep aspen for my snakes and my big BCI has been on a RHP since she was a baby for just over 3 years and she is fine. Actually she is a bit overweight so I've had to put her on a diet lol but none of my snakes use UTHs as like I said, I give them all deep layers of aspen for them to bury and dig around in and they all are fine and happy.
