I change substrate once a week and the first 5-6 days all I smell is pine. On the last day or two I can pick up a slight scent of ammonia but only when I'm nearby. The key to raising rodents without offensive odors is to not overcrowd(with no more than 1 male per tub), deeper substrate, frequent bedding changes. It costs a bit more than skimping on bedding and overcrowding but I'll take that tradeoff any day. I also feed off males first so by the time my rodents are weaned I'm down to mostly females.

I keep my rats at 1.4 in mortar tub rack. In the basement near the furnace. You can go in the basement and only know they are there when you hear pups squeak or see the substrate i spilled all over the floor . I clean once a week and have a good layer of substrate. I also have a cheap box fan with a 20 X 20 furnace filter taped to the back. You smell absolutely nothing in the basement unless you pretty much stick your head in a week old tub. My fiance hates my rats but doesn't complain as she doesn't notice them there. Actually my snakes probably smell more than my rats lol as they all poop on different days just to spite me

How hard was she sleeping to not wake her when you opened the tub? LoL
I found a reduction in odor when I started using less bedding.
Use to be 4 or 5 days and they would start to stink but now even on day 7 there is not much of a smell unless they flood a tub....
