Question about CHE's

Hey people,

So I currently have a 60 watt CHE for my ambient temps. I know I need a stronger bulb because my room gets quite cold at night and I wake up to find my ambient at 70 degrees. The che is hovering directly above the lid. Going to opt for a 100 watt with a dimmer switch. Basking spot is a uth with a thermostat.

Currently I have no Hole for the bulb and im just pointing the heater directly at the black lid. I do not want to have to cut a hole in the lid.


Do you think 100 watt CHE with a dimmer will be enough to heat my tub through the black lid?

Are you talking about a black plastic lid?

I think a 100w will melt a lid on a tub.

Yes I am talking about a plastic lid. I need to note that I am not going to be putting the lamp directly on top of the lid or anywhere near where it would melt the plastic. I am able to hover the lamp at any distance so that is not an issue I will also be using a dimmer. I just wanted to know if people thought that I would be able to bump up my ambients this way so i do not have to cut the lid.

A picture would help, I wouldn't put a CHE directly near any plastic. They are VERY hot at the surface.

It is a normal 38 qt tub setup with a locking lid, The clamp lamp will be suspended above and controlled with a rheostat. I can control the distance from which the lamp is suspended.

The lamp will NOT be directly on the tub or close enough to melt the plastic nor putting out full power. I just want to know if people think i will be able to raise my ambients a few degrees through the lid. Essentially I just want to warm the area my tub is located in.

A 100w che will melt that plastic lid, in order for that not to happen its gonna have to be far away from the lid and then its not gonna heat well because all that heat will dissipate into the air... heat lamps arent a great idea for plastic tubs, your better off getting a uth and a thermostat to heat your enclosure

I hear what you are saying, but my tub is actually located in a privacy desk like in a library with walls on three sides. I will be suspending the lamp well enough above where I highly doubt the plastic will melt. I am more or less trying to heat up the air within this space.

High enough for it not to melt the plastic will render it basically useless. im just trying to save you time, money and frustration.... that light will need to be well over a foot away from the lid to not melt or warp it, not to mention that the heat your trying to create will just disappear into the air faster then it could reach the tub. Your better off keeping your light setup and buying a uth and using that with a dimmer or thermostat to warm your tub... heat lights arent really ment to be used with tubs because of how they produce the heat
