Substrate question...

So, I'm planning on brining home my new bp this week. I can use paper towels or blank newspaper as a substrate, but I'd rather use something more natural looking. The problem is that I'm highly allergic to aspen and most other plant matter. My question is this: Does anyone ever use organic, pesticide and chemical free potting soil? What would be the pitfalls for this. What are my other options if most plant matter is out of the question?

Make sure you've got plenty of drainage. Many people use bioactive substrate.

If you can use soil couldn't you use coconut husk?

Would this be a good option? I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what would be safe!

There are also the material based substrates. Google cageliners.com for the various options. They are made to fit directly to the size of your enclosure. They are disposable as well and can be purchased by the roll.

I bought done coconut substrate to try! It will be at least a week before I bring him home so I'll set up my tank and work with the substrate before he arrives. Let's hope I'm not allergic!

I use paper towels and wouldn't use anything else. I've done coconut husks before and it was such a pain to completely clean the cage that I wouldn't do it as often as I should have. It also holds odor too. You can keep the cage 100% clean and odor free with paper towels, and no need to dump everything to clean it! One down side is it isn't a good display option. But I use a rack system
