Hey i'm getting a new snake! thinking corn could use advice

Hey i'm getting a pet snake. I'm thinking Albino Corn snake. I'm going to the dixie reptile show in Birmingham, al. on Dec 18! i'm not sure. I'm hiding it in the closet without my parents knowing. with a heating pad and certain supplies. My friend is really good wiht her corn. so hopefully it'll all work out!

Your really going to keep a snake without your parents knowing ? what happens when it gets bigger, it wont be that easy to hide a minimum of a twenty gallon tank.......

Advice.......hmm its kinda hard for me to "give advice" like this , it would be easier if you asked a question

yea, definantly tell your parents? how you gonna get food for it? what if you need to take it to the vet? what if it escapes? better off just telling your parents

Corn snakes are a great starter snake. They tolerate temperature variations well, and they don't have the humidity requirements that pythons do. I have a few babies in Sterilite shoeboxes with some aspen, a hide and a water dish. They're doing quite well. A small heat pad placed under the container will provide plenty of heat. If you prefer glass tanks, I would start out with a 5 gallon tank with a screen lid that slides and locks. Baby corns are very tiny and can squeeze through very small spaces. Aspen is a great substrate for corns. If you get a baby, you'll need a good supply of pinkie mice. If you ask more specific questions, I'm sure we'll all try to help out.

I don't recommend hiding the snake from your parents, but it has been done before.

I would tell my parents but see, my step mom hates them. And my friend is pulling it off very well. It will be kept very well care of. My friend will keep the frozen pinky's over at his house. See the reason my step mom wont let me have one is because she doesnt like them. SHE TRIED TO FLUSH MY HAMSTER ONE DAY! i'm not kidding. But i'm 17 i think i can handle it.....i think. Well i do hope Every thing will come out ok!

OH yes, i have one of those plastic large cages from walmart. This one is for small reptiles or breeders. It was over near the fishes. Its pretty big, and i think it'll work well cause i'm getting a small one first. I"m hoping that by the time i'm 18 and getting ready to move out that the snake will move with me. (dont think i'm going to force it into a little tank when it gets bigger, i have empty fish tanks everywhere!)

I know you probably really want one, but why not wait until you can move out. What if she finds the snake? If she flushed your hamster I'd hate to think what she'd do to a snake. I personally do not think it's worth it nor is it responsible to risk it. Especially if you think you may be able to move out when you're 18 (you're already 17). I say think a little bit more about the safety of the animal and just wait. In the meantime just do a lot of research about snakes and find the right one for you. Or start saving up and buying a nice setup so that all you then have to do is move and add a snake. You also have to think about if wherever you move will allow the snake. Best of luck!

This sounds painfully simliar to a stunt my friend tried last year (she was also 17). She tried keeping a baby corn snake in a plastic drawer in her closet, and kept her frozen mice at my house. It all ended up being a big disaster because the snake escaped on more than one occasion and her mother eventually found out. Her mother wasn't as upset as her step dad was. I offered to take it and keep it for a year until she moved out, but it ended up escaping at my house too, and, well... we never found her. My friend's parents didn't trust her in the first place because of other things she had done, and keeping the snake from them just made it worse. I don't think hiding anything from your parents is a good idea, I'm on the verge of 19 amd still living at home, and tell my mom everything and she trusts me because of it. I'd recommend being patient and just wait until next year.
