Bedding and humidity
I recently got my first bp. I was using aspen as a bedding, like the breeder suggested, but I found that keeping it humid in the cage was difficult. So I switched to coconut husk. That was a disaster. He was burrowing in it for the first day, while it was wet, but when it started to dry out he wouldn't move on it. So I changed it out and am now trying moss. He seemed unsure of it and acted like he didn't want it touching his body. I am a new bp owner but I am also a huge worry wort. So if anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Lets begin with what your keeping him in, aspen isnt the best for humidity but still works, its what i use currently in my tanks, if you are using a glass tank your gonna want to cover the majority of the screen top in foil to trap humidity in

I use aspen for my kingsnake. I keep my BP one coconut fiber then a nice layer of cypress mulch on top of the coconut. Then you soak everything down real good and you got a nice look substrate that keeps your humidity 50%+

Use "forest floor cypress mulch" that stuff works awesome for humidity.

If you want something like that. Get eco earth the bricks. Follow the directions on the package. Then spread a nice thick layer of of it on the bottom of the tank then put the cypress mulch on top of that. Spray the cypress down nice and wet once and you should be golden

I keep him in a glass tank. I have covered the top with foil to help keep the moisture in. I'm hoping that his weird response to the moss was just because he is starting his shed which I realized last night. I really appreciate the advice. It's amazing to me all the information online about bp. It can actually be too much and contradicting, so it's nice to just get advice from other bp owners.

Try switching to a "versa top" cover for the glass tank enclosure. It is twofold in the benefits of increasing humidity and raising ambient enclosure temps. Also 100% cypress mulch is a great substrate!

I use aspen for my snakes and have used it for years and have no problem keeping 50-60% humidity even in glass tanks. In my PVC cage for my big girl, I get 64% with aspen. For glass tanks, I cut a piece of thick cardboard to fit the whole cage. Then I cut a hole about 1" bigger than the diameter of the dome for the CHE on whichever side I want as the warm side. Then I cover the cardboard in with tin foil. Then you can adjust the height of the dome from the cardboard to regulate the air flow. You can do this with plexi or tempered glass too but its a lot more expensive. Also I use RBI hides which have flat tops and are perfect for laying a wet paper towel on top of the warm side hide and just refresh it with water in the mornings and evening. This keeps great humidity and I have actually caught my baby boa basking on the wet paper towel under her CHE just after I soaked it. I personally hate Eco Earth as I have had it mold, it gets everywhere, gets dusty if allowed to dry out and my boas as babies loved to burrow and it would get in their nostrils. Aspen has worked much better except if you have a flimsy water dish and your snake tips it, you will need to change out the aspen as it will mold.

Re: Bedding and humidity
I actually use newspaper that's been finely shredded in the paper shredder. The humidity in my rack doesn't drop below 52%. Works well for my setup, and I as economical as you can get.
