Profit is an easy formula. Income > Expenses = Profit.

I think southpark summed it up best with the underwear gnomes episode... just insert snakes into underwear and you're golden.

    Haha

Buy pied or pied combo females, breed to a powerhouse pied male or 2.

I don't work with pieds but most people seem to agree they sell the best by far.

    This. Internalize this.

Move slow and practice self control. Make an investment and don't buy more snakes until you make your money back and then some. Holdbacks are good. Build your stock via holdbacks - patience.

So the question for the OP is what kind of profit are you looking to make? Do you want to make a living out of this?

If so you will need to treat it like a business and have a solid business plan and meaningful initial investment.
OP said he wants to make a living off of it in the original post.

    Agreed

How much do you need to pay yourself (income),+ overhead, (expenses include electricity, food, vet, cleaning supplies, hardware maintenance),
Then profit is left over and THAT pays the business. You use this to buy new animals, racks, etc.

I'm a contractor and one thing it took me a minute to learn that, what I paid myself IS NOT what. I pay the business. That is used for new tools, trucks, trailers etc. That does not come out of my personal fund after establishment. It should already be there.

Re: How to start making profit?

My friends who breed snakes, one in particular (i estimate he sold $30-40,000. In snakes last year ) Uses facebook to promote his snakes. He posts an availability list every couple days, and posts any pictures as he goes through the year about what he is working on. Before anyy of his 3 monthly shows, he posts in those groups what he will be bringing.

Also variety is the spice of life, think of adding a few boas, burms, , colubrids or whatever. Retic morphs are pretty hot right now, and boas seem to be pretty steady over the years, to what you produce and you can expand your customer base.
