He looks like he was a good size before he died. I've never seen a hermit crab that big.

My son has a hermit crab, we have had it in the house for months, it has never switched shells, and I have never seen it molt. Hmm, wonder why, any ideas? How can you tell if they are male or female?

Hmm i dont know why it hasnt switched shells, maybe he just really really likes the one he is in, i have had a few crabs who havent switched shells, or has taken a very very LOOONG time for them to do so
What kind of enclosure do you have him in, if the humidity is not right then they will not molt, they need high humidity to both molt and breathe, they breathe out of gills and if it is not moist they will slowly suffocate to death
Its kinda hard to tell if its a male or female you have to see the underside of the crab when it hangs out of its shell, if it is a female there will be 2 small hole like things and if its a male, there will be no holes, the holes are used to carry eggs to the water.

How big can a hermit crab get anyway? I've always seen the little ones.

They can get to be pretty large, ive seen some the size of baseballs and even bigger. But it usually takes a real long time for them to grow.Even after a molt they dont seem any bigger.
