New the the board, and a big thank you to all of you
Hi all. I brought my first ball home this past Wednesday. I've been reading this board for a few weeks now making sure I had everthing in order to bring my new buddy home. I bought a 1.0 baby normal from a local big box retail pet store. I have heard the pros and cons of this, but did i thorough inspection of him and visited several times before buying. His name is Ajax.
By reading and searching on this board I was able to set up an enclosure and solve temp and humidity issues prior to introducing the animal to the enclosure. I'm using a 40B tank with a screen lid, covered in tin foil tape. I have one UTH on a thermostat and a decent thermometer/hygrometer. I lined the enclosure with coconut shavings and watched as it settled in at 80 degrees and 55% humidity. I wouldn't have been able to do this without all of the knowledge from you all.
I have also decided to feed T/F in the enclosure (using tongs), and tonight Ajax at his first fuzzy mouse for me. As I gain experience, hopefully I can give back to others who are in my shoes.
Thanks again, everyone!

Hello Mike, and to BP.net. I think that it's great that you took the time to do the research, and have everything up and running before you brought your new friend home. As you have probably noticed, there are many different tips, tricks, and techniques covering most any topic, and proper preparation will alleviate alot of stress and anxiety. If anything comes up that you need help with, feel free to ask. Good job...

Cool, thank you for getting educated right from the start! Too many new owners don't.
Now, you may as well go ahead and order PAM and Reptile Spray. I figure in another 10-14 days you're going to find mites... though I would love to be wrong.

Another way to deal with mites is by using lice and bed bug linen spray. It has permethrin in it and that is what kills mites. You soak everything in the tank in a 30:1 water to bleach ratio for an hour or so. While doing that, clean the tank itself. After cleaning everything, spray everything down with the bed bug spray and let it dry for a few hours. When you go to put everything back in the tank, use paper towel as substrate so you can see any living mites or see the dead ones. Don't go back to any other substrate for at least 30 days.
Next get Nix cream rinse and mix a 30:1 solution of distilled water to Nix and spray your snake down in a separate container once every 4 days for like 3 weeks. Nix cream rinse has permethrin in it as well and it will kill mites living on your snake.
All of this stuff is available at CVS in the anti-itch section so you don't have to order it online. The bedbug spray is basically the same thing as Provent-a-Mite as they both have the same active ingredient. Just use the CVS brand of bedbug spray because it's like $6 for the spray, but use NIX brand cream rinse. Unfortunately that stuff is expensive, but it will last you a long time with the 30:1 ratio. It comes in a little 2-pack of these bottles and it's over $20 but the active ingredient in it is also permethrin, but it won't harm your snakes if you make the 30:1 ratio of distilled water to Nix.
