    But what do you mean how do they keep their marks?

    It's kind of like a friend of mine who has a birth mark in his hair. He has jet black hair and one spot on the side that is about the size of a golf ball that is snow white. He can cut it out and it grows right back. Snakes tend to keep their markings, it may get brighter or fade with age, but the x will more than likely remain. I have not noticed any of mine that their markings really change.
