    GIMP 2 advice please

Can someone tell me if there is a function on Gimp that you can use that will make the background all white or all black for a light tent photo? I 'm want to have my backgrounds look like Wilbanks and for the snake to look like it is floating. I appreciate any advice or if you can point me in the right direction for a tutorial. I know there is a sticky in the photo section but that is on a different version of Gimp and doesn't go into depth. Also, If Photoshop is easier please point me in the direction to a free download. Thanks!

I haven't used GIMP much yet, but you could always select everything BUT the snake, then paint it all whatever color you want. It's easier for ME in PS, just because I'm more familiar with it. Magic wand on the snake, select inverse, paint bucket. Unfortunately, I've never seen a free download of PS.
