praying mantis
hey guys i found a praying mantis before winter. she laid a egg case and i want to hatch it. but i don't know how to i live in utah so do they need to go thought a cool down period. any help to hatch them. and the steps would be great. thanks

If they hatch during winter, remember you will need a food source for them until spring. Flightless fruit flies are great for a little while, but I would release as soon as possible to reduce cannibalism. Be prepared, the nymphs are TINY and fast and there will be lots! Mantids are Awesome!!!

I bought some mantises last year for our garden and one of them laid an ootheca on a potted plant that we brought in for the winter. In fact she was still on the plant and she ended up living in our house for about two months after I brought the plants in for the winter. She lived in one of our window ledges and I was feeding her mealworms from tongs. It was kind of cool. Anyway, I snipped off the ootheca and put it in a deli cup in the refrigerator and we'll be seeing if it hatches out this spring.
