Raw cotton is not dangerous. It's the processed material that can be dangerous because of the long fibers. Artificial materials like 'cotton badding' can be the same way.

I give my mice raw cotton all the time, and they make nests out of it in the wild, too.

Where do you buy raw cotton?

I'm... not really sure any more. I used to get it from pet stores in a little bag. It's off-white/brown ish, and has little pieces of stems and seed casings still in the cotton. I think it's sold for rodents, as well as being sold for small birds to make nests out of. It's probably easy to find online somewhere, I might actually go look for some now, I'm all out of nesting materials!

I never breed mice, someone gave me a pregnant mother so I figured I'd see the litter through.

Ended up just giving her to a friend who has mice eaters. I assume she's been fooded by now or something.

If you ever do decide to breed mice, that is the proper way to deal with cannibalism…swift and brutal. It is a genetic trait that can really screw with your production. I've had it almost stop production across 200 mice due to ONE litter of eaters that slipped through.

mice are hard dude, everyone I know who breeds rats tend to pull hair out over mice.

Buy from good stock or you're taking a chance every time. You're still taking a chance with good stock, but the chance it much lower if the mice have been selectively bred over many generations for good qualities, and not just bred at random for more production.
