Hognoses are awesome snakes. Actually it was an escaped adult hognosed and its encounter with my mom in 6th grade or so that pretty much ended my mom's tolerance for me keeping snakes "under her roof" hehe.

My best friend has a western hoggie - she's a beautiful snake, about 2.5 feet, but prettymean-tempered. Sometimes, if she feels threatened, she'll play dead (which is kind-of funny), but more often she bites. And that hurts. If you want to get one - try to get a snake with a docile personality. It won't kill you when they bite, but it hurts like hell.

Yeah I actually grew up in an apartment also (NYC)
My parents never let me get any pet, let alone a snake.
    Bradon is a lucky fellow.

I actually had a few friends in high school that had herps.
I got a bit of experience from them, and even a bigger urge to get one!

Loads of adorable little baby hognose snakes at the Tucson show yesterday. It's funny, too. Last year when I went to the Tucson show for the first time, I was looking for a Rosy Boa, as I'd heard they were an excellent first snake. No one had any, though. I ended up with my first Ball Python Phil instead.

This year, folks had more Rosies than you could shake a stick at. Oh well. I like my Ball Pythons anyway.

Way back when I was a teenager, I was heavily into tropical fish. I didn't have a separate room for my aquariums, but my folks really did a lot to encourage my interest, including my Dad put together a network of shelves using cinder blocks and 2X4's, and they picked up a dual-piston pump which Dad put together a PVC pipe manifold to connect it to. Once I became a parent, I understood more why my parents did such things. Not only was it something that I loved and made me happy, but to them, it had the additional benefit of encouraging an activity that they didn't have to worry about. Since I was home indulging in a hobby, I wasn't out getting into trouble.
We do not quit playing because we grow old; we grow old because we quit playing.
