    Question Cold Weather Adjustments

Has anyone here besides me been doing some heating adjustments due to this cold weather that came out of nowhere? I know that some of you folks live in much colder places than I do and are used to the temp drop ( I'm in South California) but the weather here at night has been dipping down to 36F which is definitely not normal for us. Again, definitely not complaining but just wondering if you guys had to do more to keep the temps up for your reptiles.

I had to fire up my heat lamp at full blast to keep my tank from dipping down past mid 70s. I'm probably also going to grab a small heater to keep the room temps up. Any suggestions on a small electric heater I'd be comfortable leaving on at the night while I sleep?

    Cold Weather Adjustments

During the colder months I put a oil filled heater in my reptile room. Other than that I don't adjust the thermostats. I don't run the oil heater in the summer because that room stays warm during those months.

It's the opposite for me. The heating in my apartment building is so effective I have to readjust the rack thermostats to avoid getting too hot whenever it's slightly above freezing outside.

I keep air condition on through November because everyone else in the building blasts their heat.

It's -25 here right now. I always have to have a 75w red light on over the cool side to keep the cool side warm enough. :/

    Re: Cold Weather Adjustments

I am in SoCal as well and have dealt with the same issue in the past when mine were in tanks. I went to Home Depot and got a roll of bubble wrap with the small bubbles. I put two layers on the back and both sides with the bubbles pointing in. Some people even put aluminum foil over that. It made a difference of a few degrees.

As far as a small heater - I recommend that you go to Costco and get the Bionaire ceramic heater. It is only 20 inches high and will swivel back and forth or stay stationary. It has a digital thermostat so you can set the desired temperature, as well as a remote control. It is UL listed and even has an auto-off safety in case it gets tipped over. I use one and it easily will keep a room warm.

That's crazy... I was supposed to receive my new snake today from a breeder, but decided to wait because they're having freezing weather as well. They're in Ohio I believe.

    I appreciate the suggestion.

Yea, I'm planning to leave glass tanks pretty soon and either transfer to PVC or build a nice wooden terrarium. Thanks for the suggested heater. I'm going to look into it.

    Cold Weather Adjustments

I only heat my snake room, no lights or flexwatt, and I'm using this little guy:

It keeps my room at a nice toasty 84° and if you run a controller on it you can program nighttime drops too, and use it as a fail safe incase the built in thermostat fails.

Got it at walmart for $35 and it is solid.
