Dry Belly Scales

I just recently moved my yearling BP into a 40 gallon breeder tank. His temps are 90-88 on the hot side, and 80-75 on the cool side (there's a big gap since its such a big tank, but I'm working on it.) He's on aspen bedding. I've been having trouble keeping the humidity up, so I put in a humid hide in the middle for him. He's also got a large water bowl on the cool end that he can soak in, though I've never seen him soak. But he has been spending a lot of time in the humid hide since I put it in there for him.

Now for my question: I took him out today and I noticed that his belly scales are really rough and dry feeling. He just shed about a week ago, and it was a complete shed, no problems there. So, I'm trying to figure out why his belly scales are so rough and dry. Any ideas? Anything I'm doing wrong that I should correct?

Pics would help. How are you measuring your temps and how are you regulating them? What type of heat source are you using.

Unforchently, its really hard to see from a picture how dry his scales are. I tried the best I could, but this was the only good pic I got. Plus, he was being a wiggle worm, so that didn't help lol.



As for your other questions: I use a switch dimmer connected to a UTH. I have probe thermometers on either side of his tank. And, I don't think I mentioned this, but at night he has been very active of late. He was the same way in his smaller tank (a 29g), but I figured I should mention that too.
