    Local vs Professional shows?

So, are you more inclined to go to say Repticon or NARBC over a local show?

Right now, in my state, a bunch of people with their noses in the air are trying to put together their own show. I personally feel like it'll be a waste of money on everyone's part and just be a social gathering for these people who are putting it on.

However, Repticon is planning a show in six weeks here. This would create a "conflict of interest" for this no name first time show. I would love to have them come, because that could mean BHB, C Serpents, people that I would love to come vend in Oklahoma might eventually come if the market proves worth it. It also might set a standard that could create a Midwest Reptile show that could spawn an NARBC or similar large scale show.

How would you feel, and what would you do?

Are you sure the "independent" show is being put on for that reason??

I think it would be cool for all the local breeders in an area to put on a show themselves; kinda make the local reptile scene more personal for the public, rather than large expos all the time

    BHB doesn't do Repticon.

I didn't know they didn't, but it would be nice for big shows to come here.

I basically do feel like this show is for that reason. I mean, it's called the Oklahoma Elite Show... And they all have at one time or another attacked newbies and first time breeders for not knowing everything.

    BHB was just an example.

    Local vs Professional shows?

The only shows close to me last year were over 300 miles away. This year a group of local breeders started a show that's about 80 miles away. I love having the local show I get to meet a lot of people close by that I wouldn't meet or know they were close by.

I guess because I have a preconceived opinion about the people involved is why I would rather a bigger, established show come and form than a group of friends try to put one on. I mean, sure if you're a vendor and you know a friend is going to be there, then of course you'll go chat. But I feel like these people would rub elbows with the people they wanted and it would be like a real informal shindig, where not a lot of money is made for anyone.

I guess I could be wrong, I personally would rather Repticon come regardless of when their show is. I would like to see what a "larger" show is like.

Yes those shows are very good. But 300 miles from me. The new expo near me has 2 locations. 1 in southeast ny and 1 in central ny. Both about 80 miles from me.

I'll take local since I really prefer to buy animals if I can take a good look at them first. Plus you get better deals when paying cash.

The big shows (Reptile Super Show in both Pomona and San Diego, NARBC in Anaheim) are fairly local to me, about 58-83 miles away. If there was a smaller show even closer to me, I'd probably go to it. In fact... a show closer to me WOULD be easier to get to. I don't really care if it's a big show or a small show, as long as there's something there to actually look at and enjoy. I probably wouldn't want to pay to get into a small show (have to pay to get into the super shows), unless I knew it had a lot of neat things. In some respects a smaller show is nicer than the bigger shows because you don't have the huge crowds, so it is easier to get to each booth and see what's on the table, without people bumping and pushing you out of the way.
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.
