    San Diego Field Herping

After returning from a recent trip to California, I thought I'd post a quick summery showcasing some of the herp highlites from my time out in the desert. During the night it would seldom get below 100 degrees, and road temps were quite high, leading us to not so favorable conditions. None the less, we managed to do quite well, and even got a morph! Good times. . .

Spotted Leaf-nosed Snake was probably THE most common species encountered, finding 5 on our first night

Our mutant, striped phase California Kingsnake!

Habitat photograph of the kingsnake and of this next one . . . (this was taken around 1 AM on LONG exposure and rock steady tripod)

    California Rosy Boa (Tri-striped subspecies)

    And Colorado Desert Shovel-nosed Snake

When I flew back in on Wednesday, I woke up early thursday and spent the day on the Texas coast doing a lot of bird photography, and the day went so well with a friend, we ended up staying out long enough to do some field herping as well turning up quite a few goodies, I'll add to this more later, but here is a sneak snake peak from Thursday's herps

And another from last Thursday. Hoping to get back out in the field soon and hit this same location again. During our 1-2 hours of herping we found roughly 7 snakes across 5 species, including the illusive Mississippi Green Water Snake!
