ok im looking to get 2 bearded dragons. the cage i have in mind for them would be 48"long 24" wide and 24"tall. what do you think?

eh, i dont do numbers. lol... i'm a rubbermaid kinda' guy. tank deminsions mean nothing to me.

I think that should be a fine size for a pair. But make sure they are either both female, or a male/female pair. And if you get a pair, be prepared to deal with egg-laying issues when they mature.

The height of the cage might be the only issue....does a beardie REALLY need to be 6-8" away from the UVB light to benefit from it??? I adopted an otherwise healthy BD with a relatively small strip light that sits about 14" from the floor (40gal Breeder with about 2" on substrate).

Check out this link for lighting. There are better bulbs that send uv rays alot farther then 8 inches.

With the strip lights, they do need to be within 12" or so to get some benefit. I've got a climbing branch set up in my tank and Shaggy will sometimes get up on that and bask right under the UVB bulb. You should probably get a longer bulb so that you can flood as much of the tank as possible with the UVB light.
