Coon Rapids, MN to Limit Numbers: Support Needed

The Coon Rapids, MN City Council is in their final phases of drafting an ordinance to limit the number of caged animals to 12 per household. This ordinance was specifically drafted to address snake keepers, breeders, and their feeder colonies and we need your help to abolish this nonsense. A handful of other cities in MN are eye-balling this proposed ordinance to see what becomes of it and if it passes, we may see a decline in the ability to keep our reptiles.

I don't have a fancy letter to copy and paste (if you do, please share here), but if you could take a few minutes to contact them...your efforts would be greatly appreciated here in MN!

Usually ANY support helps, whether you're from the state or not. As a member of USARK, I am often sending emails to support reptile owners who are facing the same thing.

I just sent them an email! I'm a citizen of Apple Valley and hope this type of ordinance doesn't get out of hand or go state wide.

Thanks all. I live in Southern MN, but have lived in the Cities and I know when it comes to ordinances it seems to be Monkey See, Monkey Do.

Re: Coon Rapids, MN to Limit Numbers: Support Needed

When we learned of a similar ordinance for Dane County WI, we wrote up one page letters/petitions against the ordinance that we would have anyone we could sign at the bottom with their name and address. We talked to everyone we possibly could at areas pet stores and other businesses, friends, family, neighbors, relatives, and others who we thought might have been affected or otherwise supportive of our efforts. Even little Johnny down the street who decided to breed his goldfish and ended up with 13 eggs instead of 12. If they lived outside the area, we still had them sign a copy by including a brief note about how the ordinance would still affect them (i.e. would affect their decision to move, seek veterinary treatment, do business in the area, etc.) We then took our folder of signed letters and presented them to the council/board when the ordinance was up on the agenda. Over the course of about a year, we were able to collect over 1,000 signed letters against the ordinance. I would be able to send you a tailored copy of the letter we used within the next few days if you would want.

I work in the Metro even though I live in SD. My aunt has a really good standing in the local government in your area and even though she hates snakes she is going to look into things and see if she can help out in this matter.

She is a delegate and works on campaigns of several in office etc. I am not going to bother with putting which side of the aisle as that is not important, what is important is that she is going to try and help.
